Community Garden Toolkit

This toolkit is intended for individuals or groups starting or maintaining community gardens in Maine. It was created in partnership with the Maine Cooperative Extension.

Resources include example:

  • Community garden planning guides - lots of resources about how to get started!

  • Garden management guides - Garden management varies by garden type.  Generally speaking the manager, or management team is responsible for garden guidelines, rule enforcement, volunteer organization, plot assignment and basic admin, communications and conflict resolutions.  While the specific tasks vary, the ultimate responsibility lies with this person or group.

  • Template documents - Save time by building on existing resources like: membership applications, garden guidelines and membership agreements.

  • Descriptions of garden types - from community gardens to cooperative gardens, school gardens, food forests, and more.

  • Commonly needed garden resources - including information on soil and water testing, water access, and pest control.

  • Tools - volunteer management, leadership and data tracking tools

  • Common challenges - how to address challenges like liability, theft, member conflict and working with your local municipality

  • Funding - list of grants that can help keep your garden growing!
